Reshaping the Life Sciences industry through AI: hype or hope?

January 20th 2025

Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to reshape the life sciences sector but not without significant challenges.

Despite headlines touting AI’s breakthroughs, there was a strong consensus that such claims should be met with caution. “There may never be a single real gamechanger in life sciences, and that includes AI,” said one contributor. Instead of replacing human expertise, AI is expected to augment it, enhancing decision-making rather than supplanting it.

“There may never be a single real gamechanger in life sciences, and that includes AI,”

The adoption curve is also affected by cost and risk. Implementing AI involves not just financial investment but a fundamental shift in how teams operate. The return on investment must be substantial, not marginal, for widespread change to occur.

Ultimately, the future of AI in life sciences hinges on patient applications, not technological dreams. For AI to be transformative, it must prove its value through better patient outcomes and operational efficiency. As one panellist aptly concluded, “Systematic AI use will get there but not in the next five years, maybe the next decade.”
