Digital innovation: the data challenge holding the sector back
July 1st 2025
While digital transformation is a buzzword across industries, the life sciences sector continues to lag behind.
The problem isn’t just about technology, it’s about data.
At a recent CCO round table, participants expressed concern about the quality, consistency, and accessibility of existing datasets. Drug discovery, in particular, suffers from poor documentation and fragmented data sources. Without high-quality, real-time data collection, the sector will struggle to fully harness AI and other digital tools.

“Through digital innovation, there is so much more data generated. It is how we can get this data captured and updated in a way that we can apply to the next layer of AI,” said one expert.
Digitising every stage, from discovery through to post-launch surveillance, is no longer optional; it’s a precondition for future success. Moreover, being a data-driven business is increasingly tied to funding. Investors want to see clean, well-analysed data that tells a compelling story.

The message was clear: the next wave of innovation will be data-powered, but only if the life sciences industry commits to foundational digital infrastructure.
