Digital transformation through co-design: putting clinicians at the centre of HealthTech

April 28th 2025

When it comes to digital innovation in healthcare, success hinges on more than just clever technology.

It requires deep understanding of how clinicians work and a genuine commitment to building solutions with them, not just for them.

Why co-design matters

Technology that doesn’t align with clinical workflows risks rejection, regardless of its potential. Frontline staff are more likely to embrace innovation when they’ve had a hand in shaping it. This co-design approach not only improves usability but ensures tech supports, rather than disrupts, the delivery of care.

The panel noted that much of the current tech effort focuses on diagnostics, yet this isn’t what clinicians see as the core problem. What’s needed are tools that increase delivery capacity, not just decision-making. That distinction is critical.

Balancing cost and quality

Another challenge is how success is measured. Too often, digital solutions are assessed solely on cost savings, like fewer GP appointments or cheaper prescriptions while overlooking quality of care or patient experience. A more balanced, long-term view is needed.

Panellists also emphasized the importance of learning from failure. Not every pilot will work, but a risk-averse culture and lack of tolerance for underperformance stifle progress. Systems need space to test, learn, and improve.

The path forward

For digital transformation to succeed:

  • Clinicians must be co-creators, not passive recipients.
  • Success metrics must reflect quality, not just short-term savings.
  • Leadership must enable experimentation with realistic expectations.

Technology alone won’t fix healthcare but when developed in true partnership with those who use it, it can be a powerful tool for change.
